Hida Takayama Day 4 - Takayama Old Town, Hida Beef Nigiri, Maruaki Hida Takayama, Misokatsu Yabaton

Takayama is a good base as it has highway  bus connection and regular trains to many attraction places such as Shirakawago & Shinhotaka Ropeway  also other cities like Toyama and Matsumoto. Not only as base but the mountain-ringed city of Takayama is a fantastic destination in itself.

The heart of Takayama city, the Sanmachi area of preserved buildings, attracts tourists from all over the country. You could spend a whole day wandering these old streets, buying souvenirs from the many craft shops, sampling local tea and digging into local treats like hida beef sushi, dango, hida beef bun and many more. Too bad is raining otherwise you can see the mountain range clearly.

Sakaguchiya is a small shop but they are the creators of the Hida beef nigiri. It's sushi made with Hida beef that's covered with a special sauce then broiled. There most interesting thing about this restaurant, they use senbei (rice crackers) as a plate for the sushi. You can order how done you want it to be, such as rare or medium rare etc., so make sure to mention it when you order. It's something that you can only find in Hida Takayama.

Mitarashi dango is a traditional Japanese snack in which mochi (gelatinous rice) is formed into little round dumplings, then it's covered in a sauce. Usually mitarashi dango are made using a sweet soy sauce, but in Hida Takayama they use soy sauce and grill it to release the fragrance of the sauce. The mochi is in easy-to-eat bite-size pieces, so it's also popular to buy and eat as you walk around.

Opening hours: 11 AM - 9 PM
Menu:
 - Hida Beef A5 Diced Steak 2980 yen
 - Hida Beef Sukiyaki with Vegetables 3908 yen

This is the place for anyone who looking for the premium hida beef in takayama. This beautifully marbled beef has a springy bite to it. It has a light, top quality taste that you simply cannot get enough of,

For those who prefer something lighter, these restaurants usually have options for sukiyaki (thinly sliced beef simmered in a shallow pot). Perfect to share with my daughter, not grilled something soupy for her.

Misokatsu Yabaton

〒453-0015 愛知県名古屋市中村区椿町6−9
Menu :
 - Miso Katsu 1200 yen
 - Porkloin 1850 yen

My husband is craving for some more of that Miso Katsu(pork cutlet served with thick miso sauce). My husband love this tonkatsu fried pork cutlet on which to pour the rich sweet and savory sauce as to not to waste a sacred drop. From what I heard this restaurant only uses the best kind of pork from southern Kyushu, original bread crumbs to create a crispy deep-fried crust, and of course, a special Aka Miso sauce made from Miso that has been fermented for 1 and a half years.
